CYBERJAYA, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Exploration Centre is ready to train parents in the field of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) to allow them to monitor their children's activities.
Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) Talent Division director Muhammad Imran Kunalan Abdullah said parents require this training as today's children are well exposed to the Internet.
"We are well aware that children are more exposed to technology than their parents. We need to train and guide parents so they know what their children are doing.
"STEM is not only a training centre for children but also for parents and teachers," he told reporters after the lauching of the STEM Exploration Centre by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek here Thursday.
He said STEM will be extended nationwide, adopting a centre of excellence concept in each state.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Shabery said currently 40 per cent of the overall workforce in Malaysia were made up those working in ICT and this number needs to increase so that the country can reach its goal of becoming a developed and high-income nation.
MDeC launched the Stem Exploration Centre under its ICT As A Career of Choice Campaign with the aim to boost student enrolment into STEM courses to meet Malaysia's demand for knowledge workers.
The STEM Exploration Centre is equipped with technical tools and training kits provided by technology partners including IBM, Microsoft, Freescale, Keysight Technologies and Oracle.
The centre will serve to inspire youths and students interests on the various job opportunities within ICT industry which will in turn drive a new generation of innovators that can spur Malaysia's developed digital economy aspirations in the long term.
The STEM Exploration Centre is targetted to serve the public by providing hands-on workshops designed to ignite and grow children's interest with special emphasis on ICT which include weekend and night classes and school holiday programmes.
